How Teachers can Prepare for a New Academic Year
How Teachers can Prepare for a New Academic Year
Preparing for a new school year can be a bit overwhelming for teachers, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right approach and proper planning, the transition from summer to school can be smooth and successful.
Do you feel like school just got out for the summer? If so, keep in mind that the new school year will be here before we know it!
That means it’s time for teachers everywhere to start thinking about how to ready themselves and their classrooms for another year of teaching and learning.
So, what are some of the best ways to do that? Read on to discover four effective ways for teachers to prepare for the upcoming school year.
1. Review Last years’ Successes and Failure
Regardless of what we do in life, it’s always a good idea to review our professional processes and techniques and adjust them if necessary. This can be especially beneficial for teachers, which is why reviewing last year’s successes and failures is an effective way to prepare for the next school year.
Look at the Big Picture
By taking a look at the big picture (the prior school year) and analyzing what worked well and what didn’t, teachers can create an updated plan for the next school year.
For example, maybe a certain teaching technique, such as using technology for math, was well received by students and conducive to their learning, making it a sure carry-over for the upcoming school year. On the other hand, if students struggled with a certain social studies chapter, teachers might want to rethink the way they teach it in the future.
It should be noted that this approach goes beyond just teaching and learning.
Teachers should also identify successes and failures related to student discipline, parent-teacher communication and overall classroom atmosphere (rules, seating arrangements, etc.) if they want to prepare an updated plan for the new school year that covers all the bases.
2. Revisit Old Lesson Plans
To be better prepared for the new school year, teachers should revisit and revise their old lesson plans (in every subject, if possible). By reviewing past lessons, they can make sure that outdated learning approaches aren’t carried over into the next school year.
For instance, maybe a middle school life science unit that previously contained several lectures could be more thoroughly taught with the help of supplemental online science lessons.
In that case, teachers could make some adjustments to the lesson plan to cut down on the lecturing and increase the use of technology in the classroom.
By ensuring that each lesson is planned with the students’ best interests in mind, teachers should be able to prepare for and implement a successful school year.
3. Make Communication
Arrangements Early On
One of the most important aspects of a successful school year is effective teacher-parent communication. Well before the new school year begins, teachers should consider their options for communicating with parents and then make arrangements accordingly.
Nowadays, there are several different apps that allow teachers and parents to communicate quickly and easily. Whatsapp is also an efficient choice for prompt yet discrete communication. Whatever methods teachers choose, they should make it a point to send out a teacher introduction letter informing parents of these preferred communication methods so that everyone is on the same page from the get-go. If parents know that their children’s teachers are serious about staying in touch, they should feel more comfortable doing so, making effective communication between all parties easier to achieve.
